A.J. Corbin is in his sixth year on the Norfolk State University baseball coaching staff. He coaches the infielders and helps with hitting instruction, recruiting, game and field preparation, and administrative tasks.
Spartan hitters have earned 16 All-MEAC selections since Corbin took over as an assistant coach. Two of those players, Ernie Banks (Florida Marlins draftee) and Juan Serrano (independent), have reached the professional ranks.
The 2009 Spartans hit .312 as a team, which ranked second in the MEAC and is the best team average NSU has posted under Corbin’s guidance. NSU ranked third in the MEAC in batting in 2007 (.289). In 2006, the Spartan hitters led the MEAC in hitting at a .302 clip. That marked an improvement of 65 percentage points over the previous year.
Corbin made a name for himself as a versatile player at NSU under former coach Marty Miller from 2001-04. Corbin played every position but center field during his Spartan career, but saw most of his time on the mound and at first base. He ranks in the top 10 in school history in games played (185, second), at-bats (614, third), doubles (38, sixth), runs batted in (121, tied for seventh), home runs (17, tied for eighth), and hits (171, 10th).
Corbin batted .279 for his career and had a 4.12 ERA in 32 pitching appearances. He was named to the MEAC All-Tournament Team as a junior and senior, leading the Spartans in home runs in both seasons. He was also named to the first team Black College Baseball Elite squad as a relief pitcher his senior year.
A native of Gloucester, Va., Corbin earned his bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from NSU in 2004. He is currently pursuing his master’s degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix. Corbin and his wife, Tilya, reside in Norfolk.
