PRINCESS ANNE, Md.
— The Norfolk State women's cross country team turned in their best overall performance of the season on Saturday with a second-place finish at the Maryland Eastern Shore Cappy Anderson Invitational. The Spartans scored a season-best 81 points, finishing second to the University of Pittsburgh (41 points) and ahead of the five other Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference teams that participated in the meet.

Reigning MEAC champion UMES finished third with 106 points. Hampton (146) and Howard (152) took the fifth and sixth spots, while Coppin State (158) finished eighth and Morgan State (189) was ninth.

Three of the Spartans top-five finishers ran personal bests to help NSU to its great finish. Jennifer Chichester (Silver Spring, Md.) led the pack as usual, finishing second in a personal-record time of 18:04.88. Her time was just over one second of the course record that was set by overall winner Naomi Tanui of Coppin State (18:03.49).

Tia Miles (Richmond, Va.) was the Spartans' second finisher, placing eighth in 18:46 (PR). Jamia Hutto (Orlando, Fla.) (20th, 19:30.41), Anastacia Limo (Kapsabet, Kenya) (24th, 19:40.88, PR) and Syeeda Gee (Philadelphia, Pa.) (28th, 19:47.47) were NSU's next three finishers.

The Spartans had five other runners compete who all finished in under 23 minutes.

Head coach Ronda Berard was overly pleased with the team's performance and knows that if her team continues to work hard, they will be successful for the remainder of the season.

NSU takes the short trip to Williamsburg, Va. on Saturday to take part in the William & Mary Inter-Regional Challenge. The women's race begins at 10:40 a.m.
