NORFOLK, Va.
Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.) hit a short jumper with 3.9 seconds left to give host Norfolk State a 64-62 win over Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday afternoon at Echols Hall.

Deloach scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half to help the Spartans (5-16, 4-5 MEAC) win their second straight game.

Deloach scored just two points in the first half as the Spartans struggled from the floor. NSU made just nine of its 28 field goals in the first half (32 percent). The Hawks got nine points from Hillary Haley and shot 47 percent (14-of-30) from the floor to take a 34-26 lead into the half.

UMES scored the first three points of the second half to take a 37-26 advantage, but the Spartans went on a 15-2 run to take their first lead of the stanza. Marcos Tamares (Queens, N.Y.) had four points in the spurt.

The Spartans would lead by as many as six points before the Hawks (6-16, 4-5) rallied. A Tyler Hines layup and two Tim Burns free throws gave UMES a 62-60 lead with 1:25 left.

But Kyle O’Quinn (Jamaica, N.Y.) scored off a pass from Aleek Pauline (Jamaica, N.Y.) to tie the game at 62-all with 50 seconds left, and Neal Pitt missed a jumper at the other end. Deloach rebounded, and let the clock wind inside of 10 seconds before making his move to the basket and scoring the go-ahead points.

Pitt missed a shot at the other end as the Spartans held on.

Rob Hampton (Queens, N.Y.) scored 13 points while O’Quinn had his sixth double-double of the year with 12 points and 10 rebounds for NSU. Burns had 15 points, Hines 12 and Haley 10 (on 3-of-16 shooting) for the Hawks.

The Spartans host Delaware State at 8 p.m. on Monday night.
