NORFOLK, Va. | Jacob Council and Manny Jackson belted home runs on Tuesday afternoon as the Norfolk State University baseball team fell, 16-7, to Old Dominion at Bud Metheny Baseball Ballpark.
Council, who went 2-for-5, connected for a two-run homer in the first inning and Jackson, who went 3-for-5, smacked a solo shot in the sixth.
Norfolk State (2-9) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Brandon Cleveland opened the game with a double to left center and advanced to third when Chance Pollard singled to right. With one down, Dionte Brown brought Cleveland across on a single to right. Council drilled a 2-2 pitch down the right field line for the two-run homer.
Old Dominion (12-1) answered with a run in the bottom of the frame, closing the gap to 3-1.
The Monarchs tied the game at 3 with two runs in the third and took the lead for good, 4-3, with a run in the fourth.
ODU pushed the advantage to 9-3 with a five-run fifth, but Jackson's homer in the sixth cut the deficit to 9-4.
Old Dominion put the game out of reach with a run in the sixth and three in the seventh and eighth innings for a 16-4 lead.
Norfolk State closed the gap to 16-7 with three runs in the ninth but could not get any closer.
Liam Royster started for the Spartans and pitched one inning, giving up one run on two hits, with two walks and one strikeout. Mac Yarbrough, Antonio Velasquez and Dalton Barham worked in relief. Velasquez (0-3) took the loss, surrendering six runs (five earned) on five hits, with three walks and three strikeouts in two innings of work.
Old Dominion used five pitchers as Landen Burch picked up the victory. He gave up up just one run on one hit, fanned seven in 4.1 innings of relief.

Norfolk State begins a three-game Northeast Conference (NEC) series on Friday against Sacred Heart. First pitch against the Pioneers is set for 3 p.m. from Marty L. Miller Baseball Field. The Spartans will play the second game on Saturday at 1 p.m. and conclude the series with a 12 p.m. contest on Sunday.
