NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State softball team hosted Bryant University for its second doubleheader of the weekend at the NSU Softball Field on Saturday. The Spartans fell in both games, 14-6 in game one, then 5-3 in game two.
In a back-and-forth game one against the Bulldogs (4-0), the Spartans (0-8) tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning after TC Watson and Kachelle Refour both walked with the bases loaded.
In the fourth inning alone, the Spartans drew three walks and hit two singles. The team had a season high nine hits in this game which accumulated six runs scored. Loren Hudson, Emory Shorts and Julia Kearney each had multi-hit games for the Spartans.
The Spartans put together a three-run sixth inning to bring the score to 12-6 behind three consecutive singles by Brierra Tyler, Lisa Zorb, and Shorts.
The Bulldogs outscored the Spartans 11-3 through the last three innings to secure the 14-6 win.
Shorts led the team in RBIs with two as four others had one RBI: Refour, Zorb, Lauren Sheehan, and Watson.
In game two the Spartans took command and jumped out to an early lead with a three-run second inning. Kira Turner walked with the bases loaded to score the first run of the game..
Watson hit a two-RBI single up the middle to score Turner and Sheehan, who had walked in a previous at-bat, to put the Spartans up 3-0 over the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs matched the Spartans putting up three runs of their own in the top of the third to tie at 3-3. The Bulldogs scored twice more, once in the top of the fifth and once more in the top of the sixth to win the game 5-3 over the Spartans.
The Spartans were unable to capitalize with two runners on and one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, after a double play by the Bulldog third baseman.
Turner and Rylie Gilbreath each finished with two hits in game two.
Coming up - The Spartans take to the road to Charlotte, N.C. to face Queens University of Charlotte in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 24 before playing North Carolina A&T in a doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 25.
