Kyonze Chavis enters his second full season as an assistant coach for the Norfolk State men's basketball program in 2026-27 after returning to his alma mater in 2024. Following the conclusion of his playing career, Chavis rejoined the Spartans as a volunteer assistant before being elevated to a full-time assistant coach ahead of the 2025-26 season. Since returning to the Green and Gold, he has helped Norfolk State capture back-to-back MEAC Regular Season championships and the 2025 MEAC Tournament title, bringing a passion for player development and a deep understanding of the program's championship culture.
In his role, Chavis assists with all facets of the program, including player development, recruiting, scouting, practice planning, and game preparation. Known for his ability to build meaningful relationships with student-athletes, he emphasizes leadership, accountability, and continuous growth on and off the court.
Prior to joining the Norfolk State staff, Chavis coached at Norfolk Collegiate School, serving as the varsity assistant coach, head junior varsity coach, and head middle school coach. As head junior varsity coach, he led the Mighty Oaks to a 19-2 record, while helping the varsity program compile a 53-16 record over two seasons. During his coaching career, he has helped develop numerous collegiate players, including two-time MEAC Player of the Year Joe Bryant Jr., along with several other Division I student-athletes.
A transfer from Colby Community College, Chavis played four seasons for the Spartans from 2017-21 and served as a two-time team captain. He was a key contributor to Norfolk State's 2019 and 2021 MEAC regular-season championships and the 2021 MEAC Tournament title, earning an NCAA Tournament berth. As a redshirt senior, Chavis averaged 7.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.1 steals per game, highlighted by a career-high 15-point performance against Coppin State. He also scored 12 points and recorded a career-best four steals against No. 1 seed Gonzaga in the NCAA Tournament.
Chavis earned his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a minor in Criminal Justice from Norfolk State University in 2021. Throughout his coaching career, he has remained committed to developing student-athletes through the core values of family, accountability, integrity, toughness, humility, heart, gratitude, and service.
