Kevin Grisby is embarking on his 20th season as a college coach as he enters his first year as assistant head coach and cornerbacks coach at Norfolk State.
Grisby spent the 2014 season as safeties coach at Virginia State alongside head coach Latrell Scott and four other NSU assistant coaches. One of Grisby’s pupils, Devonte Piggott, earned second-team All-CIAA honors during VSU's CIAA championship run this past season. The VSU secondary coached led the CIAA with 18 interceptions, which ranked 12th in the nation among Division II football teams.Â
Prior to his one year at VSU, Grisby coached at the Trojans' CIAA rival, Virginia Union University, as assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and secondary coach from 2011-13. Grisby’s second stint at VUU was a highly successful one. His defense ranked first in the CIAA in pass defense and second in total defense in 2012, and fourth in total defense in 2013. The 2013 VUU defense included CIAA Defensive Rookie of the Year Willie Bailey.

Grisby also had a lengthy tenure at St. Paul's College from 2004-11, serving as the school's associate head coach for his first five seasons before ascending to head coach for the 2010 season. Grisby coached a St. Paul’s defense which ranked in the NCAA Division II top 10 in total defense and pass defense in consecutive seasons (2008-09).Â
While at SPC, Grisby helped develop Greg Toler, a starting defensive back this past season for the Indianapolis Colts and one of many players Grisby has helped reach the ranks of professional football. Grisby coached at SPC until the school disbanded its football program in the summer of 2011.
Grisby’s first stint at VUU came from 1996-2004, where he served as defensive coordinator, secondary coach and pro liaison. The Panthers ranked in the NCAA Division II top 20 in total defense each from year from 1999-2003. The 2000 unit led the CIAA in all major defensive statistical categories except scoring defense, where it ranked No. 2.Â
Grisby got his start in coaching at his alma mater, Bethune-Cookman University, as a graduate assistant coach from 1992-94. A native of Miami, Fla. and a noted recruiter, Grisby played collegiately as a defensive back for the Wildcats, where he earned his bachelor's degree in criminal justice in 1990.Â
Grisby had professional stints with the Philadelphia Eagles (1990), the San Antonio Riders (1991) of the World League of American Football, the Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League (1992-93) and the Las Vegas Posse of the Canadian Football League (1994).Â
Grisby is a member of the American Football Coaches Association, where he has served on the Minorities Committee. He is also a member of the National Football League Players Association (retired). In 2011, he was selected to participate in the NCAA Expert Coaches Forum in Orlando, Fla.
