Athletes of the Week
Women's Track

Cleared a season-best 5 feet, 7.75 inches to win the women's high jump title at the MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship...this marks the second straight year a Spartan female has won the outdoor high jump championship.

Men's Track
Named the Most Outstanding Performer at the MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship last weekend...earned 28 points as NSU won its third straight outdoor championship...set a new meet record in winning the long jump (26 feet, 1 inch)...also cleared 7-2.25 to win the high jump...leapt a season-best 50-9.25 to place second in the triple jump...also ran a leg on NSU's 4x100 meter team, which ran a regional-qualifying time of 40.21 seconds in the prelims.

NORFOLK, Va. - Spartan supporters are encouraged to sponsor an NSU football player's locker during the 2008 football season. The sponsor-a-locker program gives any fan the opportunity to meet and build a relationship with the individual Spartan whose locker is being sponsored. For a minimum donation of $100, the sponsor's name and hometown will be affixed to the locker of an NSU football player for the 2008 season.

Potential sponsors are encouraged to pledge their support prior to preseason camp, which begins the first week of August.

NORFOLK, Va. — The NSU softball team will hold its annual walk-on tryouts on Friday, September 5 beginning at 5:15 p.m. at the NSU Softball field.

Persons interested in joining the softball team are asked to contact the softball coaching staff in person between Thursday, August 14 and Thursday, September 4 to pick up a walk-on information packet.

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State University Athletics Foundation has reserved tables for NSUAF members and guests at the 2008 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Football Press Luncheon which will be held at noon on Friday, July 25 at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel. Tickets are $30 per person.

07.11 | Men's Track

NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State men’s track and field coach Kenneth Giles announced Friday the addition of 11 athletes to his program, which has won the last three MEAC indoor and outdoor titles.

Giles signed an array of accomplished sprinters, hurdles, middle distance specialists and throwers who he feels will help NSU remain among the top track programs on the East Coast. The recruiting class includes two national champions and five state champions.

NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State head softball coach Kary Kankey announced Tuesday the signing of pitcher/first baseman Elizabeth Castaneda (Montclair, Calif./Montclair HS), pitcher/shortstop Casey Pomeroy (Fallon, Nev./Churchill County HS), shortstop Jamie Rasnic (Houston, Tex./Western Oklahoma State College), second baseman/shortstop Candice Vasquez (Montclair, Calif./Montclair HS), and outfielder Danielle Wright (Safety Harbor, Fla./Countryside HS) to play for the Spartans in 2009.

NASSAU, The Bahamas – Former All-American Norfolk State track sprinters Chris Brown and Chandra Sturrup qualified for August’s Olympic Summer Games in Beijing with victories in the 400 and 100 meters, respectively, over the weekend at the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA) Olympic Trials.
