NORFOLK, Va. —Norfolk State basketball legends Richard “Pee Wee” Kirkland and Bob Dandridge are among the former Historically Black College and University (HCBU) greats who will be featured in an upcoming film titled “Black Magic,” which is scheduled to air March 16 and 17 at 9 p.m. on ESPN.

“Black Magic” is a four-hour, two-part collaboration between ESPN and award-winning filmmaker Dan Klores (The Boys of Second Street Park, Viva Baseball, Ring of Fire: The Emile Griffith Story and Crazy Love). Through more than 200 hours of interviews and footage, it tells the story of the injustice of the Civil Rights Movement in America as seen in the lives of basketball players and coaches who attended HBCUs. Earl “The Pearl” Monroe of Winston-Salem State University and NBA fame is a co-producer. The film is narrated by jazz great Wynton Marsalis, Academy Award nominated actor Samuel L. Jackson and NBA star Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets.

Kirkland and Dandridge are among the HBCU greats who were interviewed for the film. The two were teammates during one of the best periods in NSU basketball history. They led NSU to a 25-2 record and the CIAA championship in 1968, with Kirkland taking home CIAA Tournament MVP honors. Dandridge is seventh all-time at NSU in scoring (1,740 points) and rebounds (998). Both were 1969 NBA draftees, Kirkland by the Chicago Bulls and Dandridge by the Milwaukee Bucks.
