BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Emily London scored a game-high 10 points to help the Samford women's basketball team to a 70-33 rout of Norfolk State in the UAB Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday afternoon at Bartow Arena.
The Spartans (1-4) had their roughest outing of the young season. They had season lows in points scored (33), field goals made and attempted (9-of-44) and field goal percentage (20.5 percent).
Samford (5-1) got on the board first on a layup by London with 19:10 left in the first half and never looked back. NSU first scored at the 15:04 mark on a bucket by Marquilla Evans (Portsmouth, Va.) to cut the Bulldogs' lead to five (7-2).
The Spartans could only manage 14 points in the first half and just 19 in the second. Samford exploded for 41 points in the second stanza and led by as many as 40, 67-27, with over two minutes left.
Samford shot 54.2 percent (26-of-48) from the floor for the game and was 8-for-14 (57.1 percent) from 3-point range. Hannah Dawson had 10 points and two rebounds for the Bulldogs, while Alex Crow had nine points and 13 rebounds.
Evans had a team-high six points for NSU. Recca Trice (Arlington, Texas) and Raychele Payne (Newport News, Va.) each added five points.
The Spartans return home for their conference opener on Saturday against defending MEAC champion North Carolina A&T. Tip off is set for 4 p.m.
