WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The NSU women’s bowling team posted an 8-2 record for the second week in a row as the Spartans opened MEAC Southern Division play on Saturday and Sunday at the Northside Bowling Lanes.

NSU improved its season record to 16-4 overall and 6-2 in MEAC divisional play.

The Spartans went 4-1 for the second straight week in Saturday’s team games, defeating Florida A&M (946-834), South Carolina State (997-700), Winston-Salem State (892-661) and Bethune-Cookman (906-821). Their only setback on Saturday was a tight 791-780 loss to North Carolina A&T.

Sophomore Chelsea Krall (Virginia Beach, Va.) had the highest average for the Spartans in team play. She recorded the third-highest average of any bowler on Saturday, with a 190.8. She knocked down 200 pins or more three times, including a season-high 221 in the win over SCSU. Sophomore Sheila-Marie Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) and freshman Lauren Graupmann (Chesapeake, Va.) also contributed to NSU’s season-high 997 game against SCSU, knocking down 215 and 202 pins, respectively.

Junior Cathryn Myrick (Virginia Beach, Va.) tallied the day’s fourth-highest average, with a 184, while Graupmann was fifth with a 180.8.

NSU capped the weekend with a 4-1 mark in Sunday’s baker games. The Spartans topped B-CU, WSSU, SCSU and N.C. A&T while dropping a game to FAMU.

FAMU also went 8-2 on the weekend, but NSU had the edge over the Rattlers in total pins (8,062-7,861) for the two days combined.

The Spartans are back in action next Saturday and Sunday in another divisional competition at Bethune-Cookman.
