NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State interim women's basketball head coach Debra Clark announced on Friday the early signing of four athletes who will play for the Spartans beginning in the 2010-11 season. They are 6-0 center Carlon Chambers (Herndon, Va./Herndon HS), 5-6 guard Raeshonn Corbo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus Catholic HS), 5-11 forward Cherise “Rachel” Gordon (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn Park HS) and 6-0 forward Destiny Spence (Metropolis, Ill./Massac County HS).
“We are very excited about our first recruiting class which consists of four highly recruited student-athletes,” Clark said.
As a junior in 2008-09, Chambers averaged 13.0 points and 9.7 rebounds per game while shooting 43.8 percent from the field for Herndon. She was named to the All-Concorde District second team after her junior year.
“Carlon is a natural rebounder and will be a great physical presence on the inside,” Clark said. “Her outstanding worth ethic will also be a great addition to the program.”
Corbo averaged 14.2 points, 5.2 steals and four assists per game and had 24 blocked shots as a junior in 2008-09. She is a three-time first-team All-Northern New Jersey Interscholastic League pick and was named to the All-Bergen County second team as a junior. Corbo also participated on Paramus Catholic's nationally-ranked 4x400 meter relay team and competes in all three jumping events.
“Raeshonn is an outstanding athlete and basketball player,” Clark said. “She will add depth to the point guard position and will also be a great perimeter defender.”
Gordon recorded 13.4 points and 11.0 rebounds per game as a junior in 2008-09 before earning All-Cedar Run District and All-Northwest Region first-team honors. She was also the team captain and co-MVP last year. Through six games this season, Gordon averaging 13.0 points and 12.0 rebounds.
“Rachel as a very versatile player who will give us added quality and depth on the perimeter as well as in the post,” Clark said.
Spence averaged 10.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game as a junior for Massac County HS. She earned all-conference honors and was named to the City of Metropolis All-Tournament team after the 2008-09 season.
“Destiny is an extremely hard worker, has a great understanding of the game and will provide offense and rebounding in the post position,” Clark said.
