DOVER, Del. — Ashley Thompson had game-highs of 15 points and seven rebounds to help the Delaware State women's basketball team to a 79-47 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall. DSU improved to 13-11 on the season and 9-2 in the MEAC, while NSU fell to 0-21, 0-11.
Delaware State took control of the game early and started the game on an 8-0 run, capped by a pair of free throws by Keyhana Wakefield with 17:27 left in the first half. NSU got on the board with a jumper by Raychele Payne (Newport News, Va.) with 17:09 left.
The Lady Hornets kept the Spartans in single digits until Shaneka Lee (Newport News, Va.) made good on a three-point play with 8:31 left to cut DSU's lead to 13, 24-11. DSU outscored NSU 19-14 in the remainder of the first half to take a 43-25 lead into halftime.
In the second half, NSU only hit four of its 20 shot attempts and did not make a field goal until the 11:10 mark when Genor Dalton (Martinsville, Va.) scored on a layup to bring NSU within 20, 53-33. The Spartans were never able to catch up helping the Lady Hornets to complete the season sweep.
Sonia Johnson had 12 points and four rebounds for DSU. Marquilla Evans (Portsmouth, Va.) led NSU with 10 points. Tashawna Higgins (Toronto, Ontario) had six points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals and the team's only two blocks. .
The Spartans travel to Princess Anne, Md. to play the Lady Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore.
