Lady Pirates Beat Spartans 73-48

NORFOLK, Va. — Bernadette Fortune scored a game-high 17 points and teammate Jericka Jenkins had 12 points and eight rebounds to lead the Hampton University women's basketball team to a 73-48 win over Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon at Echols Hall.

With the win, Hampton improves to 13-13 on the season and 9-5 in the MEAC and completes the season sweep of NSU (1-24, 1-13).

The Lady Pirates got on the board first and took an 11-point lead, 20-9, on a 3-pointer by Fortune with 8:08 left in the first half. But the Spartans went on a 14-8 run capped by a pair of free throws by Sasha Wilson (West Columbia, S.C.) to close the gap to five, 28-23, with 2:32 left in the opening period.

Hampton outscored NSU 8-2 over the final 90 seconds of the first half to take a 35-25 lead into the break.

The Lady Pirates took control of the second half, shooting 40 percent (14-of-35) from the field compared to the Spartans' 29 percent (9-of-31).

For Hampton, Chinyere Ukoh had a game-high 14 rebounds to go with her six points.

Raychele Payne (Newport News, Va.) led NSU with 14 points and Wilson had a career-high 11 rebounds.

The Spartans host Howard at 6 p.m. on Monday.
