WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Paul Davis and Brian Fisher scored 19 points apiece as host Winston-Salem State notched an 82-70 non-conference win over Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon at the C.E. Gaines Center.
The loss was the second in a row for the Spartans (3-14), who were led by 20 points from Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.). WSSU improves to 6-10.
The Spartans led by as many as eight points in the first half. But the Rams outscored NSU 22-7 over the final nine-plus minutes of the period to take a 36-27 lead into the half. WSSU connected on four of its six first-half 3-pointer during the spurt to head to the break with a nine-point cushion, its largest of the game to that point.
The Spartans scored six of the first eight points in the second half to get within five points at 38-33 after a jumper by Christian Morris (Bronx, N.Y.). But Davis scored five points in a 7-0 Rams' spurt that extended their lead to double digits, at 45-33.
The Rams were able to keep NSU at arm's length by shooting 59.3 percent in the second half and 52.6 for the game. It was NSU's second consecutive game yielding over 80 points and 50 percent shooting. The Rams also connected on 80 percent from the foul line (16-of-20), including 76.5 percent (13-of-17) in the second half.
Davis hit 9-of-11 from the floor and corralled a game-high 10 rebounds. Shelton Carter added 12 points and Andrew Jackson 10 for the Rams.
The Spartans were hurt on the boards and by poor free-throw shooting. WSSU outrebounded NSU by 19 (41-22) and allowed the Spartans a season-low four offensive rebounds. The minus-19 deficit on the boards marked NSU's biggest of the season. The Spartans also shot just 42.3 percent (11-of-26) from the free-throw line, their lowest mark of the year.
Deloach was 8-of-13 from the floor and added four assists and four steals. He kept alive his streak of 19 straight games scoring in double figures, dating to last year's MEAC Tournament.
Kyle O'Quinn (Jamaica, N.Y.) added 14 points, seven rebounds and two blocks for NSU. Morris had 11 points and Rob Hampton (Queens, N.Y.) 10. Guard Aleek Pauline (Jamaica, N.Y.) contributed nine points, six assists and a career-high-tying seven of the Spartans' season-high 15 steals.
NSU travels to Orangeburg, S.C. next for a 7:30 p.m. game Monday at South Carolina State.
