Last Time Out: The Spartans went 2-1 at the Comfort Inn & Suites Classic last weekend, defeating Houston Baptist on Friday, 60-50, and then Central Arkansas in overtime on Saturday, 70-69. NSU fell to host Morehead State, 75-60, on Sunday on the final day of action.
Whitney Long tallied 23 points - the second-highest total of her career - and hit several key 3-pointers in the second half against Houston Baptist, as she went 9-of-17 overall from the field and 5-of-8 from beyond the arc.
Batavia Owens tallied 11 points and six rebounds, while
Rae Corbo had 10 points, five assists and four steals.
Carlon Chambers hit a pair of free throws with 2.4 seconds left in overtime to lift the Spartans to a win over Central Arkansas, as NSU hit 7-of-8 free throws in the extra session to pull out the win. Owens was one of four players to score in double figures with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and
Marian Brooks joined her with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Owens had another double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, but NSU had no answer for Morehead State's Ashar Harris, who totaled 30 points on 12-of-19 shooting with 13 rebounds.
Recca Trice and Corbo had seven and six assists, respectively, while Brooks and
Genor Dalton each added nine points.
About Wofford: The Terriers stand 2-3 on the year, most recently dropping an 81-48 decision to UNC Wilmington Wednesday.
Like Owens, Mahagony Williams leads her team in both scoring and rebounding at 13.4 points and 8.6 rebounds per game while shooting a team-leading 56.3 percent from the floor. Jessica Escorza ranks second on the team with 11.4 points, while April Moorhouse and Rachel Brittenham average 9.6 and 8.6 points, respectively.
Brittenham has also handed out 25 assists, while Escorza has a team-best seven steals and shoots 40.9 percent from 3-point range. Williams leads the team with 12 blocks, as the Terriers have a 27-14 advantage in that category.
Best Start in D-I: The Spartans began the year 3-0 before falling to Morehead State. It marked the first time NSU began a year 3-0 in the Division I era. The last time the Spartans won their first three games of the season was 1996-97, NSU's last year in Division II.
NSU also secured two wins in a tournament for the first time since 2005-06, when the Spartans got a pair of victories in the Carolina First Classic to open the season.
Owning the Glass: After getting outrebounded by 7.5 boards a game last year, NSU has outrebounded all four of its opponents this year. Through four games, the Spartans are averaging 7.0 more rebounds a game than their opponents.
The Spartans have also had 40 or more rebounds in all four games this year. The last time NSU had at least 40 rebounds in four straight games occurred during four straight games from Dec. 8, 2007 - Jan. 3, 2008.
Great Offense: After hitting 49.1 percent from the floor against St. Paul's, the best mark in 25 games, NSU posted a 52.9 percent shooting mark against Central Arkansas, including 66.7 percent in the first half. It had been 31 games since NSU shot better than it did against the Sugar Bears: March 5, 2009 against North Carolina A&T (54.8 percent).
NSU has shot better than its opponent in three of the four games this year.
Increased Production: After Owens averaged 4.9 points and 5.4 rebounds a game last year, the coaches stated they needed her to be a consistent double-double performer this year. So far, so good. She has scored in double figures in all four games and is posting 13.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. You can chalk it up to better conditioning, as Owens has played exactly 25 minutes in all four games this year after averaging just 14.1 minutes last year.
Mixing It Up: NSU will use a lot of combinations on the floor throughout the season, and it has shown so far. In all four games on the year, NSU has had at least seven players with 15 or more minutes on the floor.
Seeing Double: NSU players had just four double-doubles last season, including two by Owens and one by Dalton, but in just four games this season, NSU already has four double-doubles: two by Owens and one each by Brooks and Gordon.
The pair of double-doubles by Owens and Brooks against Central Arkansas marked the first time two NSU players had double-doubles in the same game since Tiffany Gadsden and Areya Walker accomplished the feat against Virginia Union Jan. 3, 2008.
Solid in Her First Start: Junior college transfer
Sarah Daily made her first start against Central Arkansas a good one, nearly joining Owens and Brooks with double-doubles. Daily tallied 13 points and eight rebounds with two steals against the Sugar Bears.
Up Next: NSU will head to North Carolina A&T Dec. 4 for the first conference game of the year before making a trip to William & Mary Dec. 15.
