NORFOLK, Va.
Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.) scored a game-high 27 points and Kyle O’Quinn (Jamaica, N.Y.) had a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds to help Norfolk State snap its four-game losing streak with an 80-71 win over Coppin State on Monday night at Echols Hall.

Deloach was 7-of-12 from the floor, 3-of-4 from behind the 3-point arc, and connected on 10-of-14 from the free-throw line for his fifth straight game with 20+ points. O’Quinn was 9-of-11 from the floor and matched his career high with 13 rebounds, his fifth double-double of the year and third in his last five games.

Coppin State (5-15, 0-8 MEAC) scored the first six points of the game. But the Spartans (4-16, 3-5) clamped down on defense and used a 10-0 run mid-way through the half to take a 28-16 lead. Isaac Nixon (Raleigh, N.C.) hit a 3-pointer to start the spurt, Deloach then scored five straight points, and Aleek Pauline (Jamaica, N.Y.) capped the run with a steal and layup.

The Eagles cut their deficit to five points heading into the half thanks to a late flurry which included a pair of 3-pointers by Kareem Brown.

But NSU outscored CSU 17-7 over the first seven minutes of the second half to take a 15-point advantage (57-42), its largest of the game to that point. The Eagles could not get closer than eight points after that.

NSU held the Eagles to 37.1 percent shooting. Lenny Young led the Eagles with 13 points and Vince Goldsberry had 11, but the two combined to make just 7-of-22 from the floor. Sam Coleman had 12 rebounds for the Eagles.

Rob Hampton (Queens, N.Y.) chipped in with 13 points for the Spartans, who shot 51.9 percent (27-of-52) from the floor. Pauline tied his career best with 11 rebounds and tied Deloach for game-high assist honors, with five. Deloach also had five of NSU’s 11 steals, while O’Quinn had three of the team’s six blocks.

The Spartans continue their four-game homestand when they face Delaware State at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
