NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State University junior Arsenio Culver (Philadelphia, Pa.) was named the MEAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the weeks of Feb. 22 and March 1, the league announced on Wednesday.
In addition, freshman Dexter McDowell (Suffolk, Va.) earned MEAC Rookie of the Week accolades for Feb. 22.
Culver did not drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Chowan’s Jordan Owens to help the Spartans to their first team victory of the season on Feb. 27. He also teamed with Jonathan Sessom (Houston, Texas) to take an 8-0 decision over the Hawks’ No. 1 doubles pair in that match.
The following week, Culver went 3-1 at No. 1 singles at the MEAC South round-robin event in Sumter, S.C. He earned a three-set win over Bethune-Cookman’s Marc Vania Misonovic, won in two sets over S.C. State All-MEAC performer Radek Pivonka and Winston-Salem State’s Brian Coxton, and took a three-set loss to FAMU’s David Jackson. Culver also teamed with Ben Marks (Worcestershire, England) for a 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles to lead the Spartans over WSSU.
Culver is currently 9-3 this season at No. 1 singles, and 6-4 at No. 1 doubles.
McDowell earned his first collegiate singles win with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Chowan’s Charles Fisher on Feb. 27.
