NORFOLK, Va. – Despite sweeping the top three singles positions, the NSU men’s tennis team dropped a close 4-3 decision to visiting North Carolina Central on Saturday afternoon at the NSU Tennis Complex.
The Spartans (3-12) actually won four of the seven matches which were contested. But defaults at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles proved to be costly.
The No. 1 doubles team of Arsenio Culver (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Ben Marks (Worcestershire, England) remained hot, winning their sixth straight match, 8-5. But the Eagles’ No 2 team of Jose Fabara and Alejandro Espitia took an 8-5 win over Jonathan Sessom (Houston, Texas) and Keenan Ruff (Norfolk, Va.). That win, coupled with the Spartans’ default at No. 3, gave NCCU the doubles point.
Culver breezed to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jack Waissen at No. 1 singles. It was Culver’s fourth straight singles win. Marks took a three-set win at No. 2 singles, claiming the super tie-breaker 10-8 to decide the third and final set. Sessom also played well, cruising a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Bryan Jackson at the No. 3 slot.
But the Eagles (5-9) got straight-set wins by Trey Chatman and Fabara at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively, to take the match.
The Spartans host Delaware at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday in their final home match of the season.
