Spartan Track Teams Look for 2009-10 Sweep

Elaine Rhoades was the MEAC women's Most Outstanding Field Performer at the MEAC indoor meet in February.

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State men's and women's track and field teams will look to complete sweeps of the 2009-10 MEAC track championships this week as they compete at the 2010 conference outdoor championships hosted by North Carolina A&T at Irwin Belk Track in Greensboro, N.C.

The Spartan men and women both won their respective 2010 MEAC indoor titles in February. If the Spartans could duplicate that feat this week at the outdoor meet, they would become the first school since Hampton University in 2003 to sweep the indoor and outdoor conference track titles for both genders in the same academic year.

The Spartan men will be seeking their fifth straight conference outdoor title and fifth straight indoor-outdoor sweep. The NSU women will vie for their first MEAC outdoor championship since 2001, which was also the last year in which both Spartan track teams won their respective conference outdoor titles at the same meet.

The championships begin Thursday, May 6 at 1 p.m. with the men's decathlon followed by the women's heptathlon at 1:30 p.m. The women's 5,000-meter race will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the men's 5,000-meter race at 5:50 p.m. will close out the first day of competition.

The action continues on Friday with the women's heptathlon and the men's decathlon. Other field events for day two include the men's and women's long jump, the women's shot put, women's pole vault, men's discus and men's high jump. The afternoon continues on the track with the men's 110m hurdles and women's 100m hurdles beginning at 1:50 p.m. Other running events include the 100m, 200m, 400m and 400m hurdles.

The final day of competition starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with the men's and women's triple jump.  Early afternoon field events include the men's shot put, pole vault and javelin. The championships will conclude with the men's and women's 4x400m relay races.

Admission into the 2010 MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships is $3 for adults and children ages 12 and older. Children under 12 and college students with valid ID are admitted free. Tickets are available at the Irwin Belk Track the day of the event.
