Bonnies Shoot Lights Out from 3, Down NSU 58-44

Box Score WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – St. Bonaventure used 12 3-pointers, including eight by Jessica Jenkins, and  a large rebounding edge to down the Norfolk State women's basketball team, 58-44, on the second day of the Hawk Holiday Classic Friday afternoon at the Multipurpose Activity Center on the campus of Monmouth.

Jenkins hit seven treys in the first half – the Bonnies had 11 as a team in that first stanza – to open an 18-point lead at the half. NSU cut the deficit down to as much as seven midway through the second half but went cold from the floor after that point to fall to 5-7 on the season. St. Bonaventure improved to 12-2.

NSU hit just under 30 percent for the game, while St. Bonaventure connected on 44.2 percent, including 12-of-19 from beyond the arc (63.2 percent). Jenkins hit 8-of-10 for a game-high 24 points, with all her shots coming from long range.

The Spartans committed a season-low 11 turnovers and forced 26 from the Bonnies for a 16-6 edge in points off turnovers. St. Bonaventure, though, had a 43-25 advantage on the boards, with Doris Ortega and Jennie Ashton combining for 21 boards.

Senior Whitney Long was the only player in double figures for the Spartans with 10. Junior Recca Trice had eight points, and sophomores Rachel Gordon and Rae Corbo tallied seven each. Freshman Ebony Brown was named to the all-tournament team.

NSU hit 17-of-57 shots overall, including just 2-of-9 from 3-point range, while St. Bonaventure connected on 19-of-43 from the floor. Thanks to the huge turnover edge, the Spartans led in steals, 10-4.

Long got NSU on the board first with a running jumper in the lane, but St. Bonaventure scored the next 10 points to take the lead. The Bonnies continued to hit from long range, opening up a 19-7 lead with 9:01 left in the half thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers by CeCe Dixon, who joined Jenkins in double figures with 11 points for the game.

NSU clawed its way back with a 9-0 run in just over two minutes of play to make it 28-20, thanks to a trey from Long and a pair of free throws from Long and Corbo. Jenkins, though, countered with four 3-pointers in the last two minutes of play to give the Bonnies a 40-22 lead at the half.

Jenkins had seven treys in the first half, as 11 of St. Bonaventure's 13 baskets in the first stanza occurred behind the arc. Long had seven points at the break to lead NSU.

NSU used a 11-2 run that lasted eight minutes to cut into the St. Bonaventure lead to start the second half, keyed by a couple of Corbo jumpers and a trey from Long. The fast start to the half allowed NSU to get to within nine, 42-33.

Trice added a pair of baskets a short time later to again get the deficit back into single digits before Jenkins converted another trey to make it 49-39 at the under-8 media timeout. Junior Batavia Owens had cut the St. Bonaventure lead to seven shortly before that Jenkins trey.

A 10-0 run that started with the Jenkins basket and lasted more than five minutes put St. Bonaventure back on top by a comfortable margin and essentially ended any hopes of a Spartan comeback. NSU hit just two field goals in the last nine minutes of play.

Corbo led NSU with three assists, while Trice had three steals. Ortega had five assists for the Bonnies.

NSU will play its last non-conference game of the season on Monday as the Spartans host George Mason at 6 p.m. at Joseph Echols Hall.
