Spartan Men Clinch 6th Straight MEAC Track Sweep

Final Results

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Norfolk State men's track & field team breezed to its sixth straight MEAC outdoor championship to pull off a sixth straight indoor-outdoor sweep  on Saturday at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T.

The Spartans tallied 162 points and scored in 15 of the weekend's 19 events to top second-place Maryland Eastern Shore by 25 points. NSU men's coach Kenneth Giles was named the MEAC Outdoor Most Outstanding Coach.

The Spartans posted two first-place finishes on Saturday. Sean Holston clocked his best time ever in the 400 meters, running a 46.00 to win the gold medal. Aramis Massenburg followed up his PR in Friday's 110 hurdle semis with another strong effort in the final, running a 13.89 to take the gold medal in that event.

A number of other Spartans posted impressive performances on Saturday. The 4x100 relay team of Holston, Ramaan Ansley, Quinten Walker and Keith Nkrumah finished third, but still ran a season-best time of 40.19 seconds.

NSU then had a total of four athletes score points in the 1,500, with Amos Kipkosgei, Josef Tessema and Philemon Kimutai taking second through fourth places. Kipkosgei and Kimutai also placed second and third, respectively, in the 3,000m steeplechase. It was Kipkosgei's third runner-up finishes in the distance races at the meet.

Holston capped his stellar weekend by setting a new PR in the 200 meters (20.73), placing second. Triple jumpers Darris Shelton (50 feet, 0.75 inch) and Rashad Cannon (49-8.25) also set collegiate bests in placing second and third, respectively.

Also posting top-five finishes were Ansley in the 100 (fourth, 10.52), senior Ryan Owens in the pole vault (fourth, 11-3) and senior Kendrick Richardson in the discus (fifth, 138-8).

With the victory Saturday, the Spartan men also wrapped up their third straight yearly sweep of the MEAC cross country, indoor and outdoor track championships.

NSU will have multiple athletes as well as at least one relay team competing later this month at the NCAA East Region meet hosted by the University of Indiana.
