NORFOLK, Va. – Grassfield High School graduate and future Norfolk State student Jazmine Foreman, 18, passed away Tuesday night after an automobile accident in her hometown of Chesapeake, Va. Foreman was one of nine student-athletes in the NSU softball program's 2011 recruiting class.
“The Norfolk State softball family and the entire University community are saddened by the news of this tragic event involving one of our student-athletes,” said interim head coach Heidi Cavallo. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Foreman family in this very difficult time.”
Hundreds attended a candlelight vigil Thursday night at the Grassfield High senior parking lot to honor Foreman. The event was organized by Foreman's friends and fellow Grassfield students. The funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Baptist Church in Chesapeake.
Fans can also share their condolences on the Facebook page, R.I.P Jazmine Foreman, which had more than 4,500 users in just over its first 24 hours of existence.
Foreman earned both athletic and academic scholarships to NSU, with plans on majoring in nursing in order to someday become an obstetrician. She registered for NSU classes on Monday and was also enrolled in the honors program.
On the field, Foreman was recently named to the All-Southeastern District Second Team along with Grassfield teammate and fellow 2011 Spartan signee Robyn Mitchell. The pair helped lead the Grizzlies to the state semifinals this year, a remarkable achievement for the four-year-old program.
A very quick player on the basepaths, Foreman was expected to compete right away for an outfield position at NSU during the 2012 season and beyond. The softball program will dedicate the 2012 season to Foreman's memory, said Cavallo.
“Jazmine was an extremely talented player on the field, but more importantly was an even better person off the field,” Cavallo stated. “She was a great student in the classroom and was an energetic personality who brought so much joy to everyone around her. My prayers and condolences go out to the Foreman family as well as the entire Grassfield community.”
