BALTIMORE, Md. – Behind monster nights by seniors Kyle O'Quinn and Marcos Tamares and enough key stops down the stretch, the Norfolk State men's basketball team outlasted Morgan State 90-89 in double overtime for its sixth straight win on Saturday evening at Hill Field House.
O'Quinn recorded 25 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high-tying seven blocks while Tamares poured in a career-high 22 points for the Spartans, who improved to 13-5 overall and 5-0 in MEAC play. NSU's current six-game winning streak is its best since the 1995-96 season, and the 13-5 start is the program's best since 1996-97, the Spartans' final year in Division II.
The 5-0 MEAC start, meanwhile, matches the 2002-03 team for the best since the team moved to Division I in 1997-98.
NSU overcame a 33-point performance from the Bears' DeWayne Jackson, rallying from 17 down in the second half to force overtime. NSU then had to weather a last-second shot from Bears' guard Larry Bastfield at the final horn to escape Hill Field House with its third consecutive win over the Bears (3-11, 1-2).
Morgan State broke open a 22-all tie midway through the first half with 10 straight points. Jackson, who scored 20 first-half points, hit two buckets during the run and Blake Bozeman capped it with a 3-pointer to give the Bears a 32-22 lead. MSU hit six 3-pointers in the first half and shot 55 percent from the floor to take a 43-36 advantage into the locker room.
The second half started with more of the same. MSU used an 8-0 burst, capped by Jackson's sixth and final trey of the night, to take its largest lead of the game at 69-52 with 8:31 left in regulation.
But the Bears hit just one more field goal in regulation, and NSU outscored the hosts 24-5 over the next eight minutes to take a short-lived 76-74 lead with 20 seconds left in regulation. O'Quinn scored 11 of those 24 points and capped the run by hitting 3-of-4 from the line, two after an MSU technical foul and one more after another Bears personal foul, to give NSU its first lead since the score was 18-16.
But MSU's Aric Brooks made two free throws with 19 seconds remaining to tie the game at 76-all. NSU swingman Chris McEachin missed a desperation attempt at a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer.
McEachin made a layup and O'Quinn converted a three-point play to give the Spartans the early momentum in the first overtime. But Brooks was fouled on a three-point attempt with 1.4 seconds left in the extra session and he converted all three free throws to send the game into a second overtime.
Morgan State held two leads in the first half of the second overtime, the last one a jumper by Ian Chiles that gave his team a 90-89 edge with 2:38 left. But the Bears did not score again. NSU forced the Bears to miss their last four shots from the floor, and the Spartans took the lead for good at 90-89 on a Tamares jumper with 1:08 remaining.
Chiles, Brooks and Bastfield all missed field goal tries in the final minute that would have given MSU the lead or the win. The Spartans also missed their final four free throws in the final 21 seconds, but managed to get the last stop they needed to come away with the victory.
O'Quinn was 9-of-14 from the floor and Tamares hit 9-of-15 for NSU, which overcame 20 turnovers and 56 percent free throw shooting (22-of-39). O'Quinn's seven blocks tie his career high set in the same gym two years ago, and are just one shy of Steve Gilbert's single-game school record set in 1992.
McEachin was the only other Spartan in double figures, with 10 points. But NSU got key bench contributions from Brandon Wheeless, Jamel Fuentes, #A.J. Rogers and Quasim Pugh#. Wheeless had seven points and six boards, while Fuentes had six points, a career-high six assists and just one turnover. Pugh and Rogers scored five points apiece.
Brooks and Chiles scored 12 apiece for the Bears, with Kevin Thompson adding 11 points and eight rebounds. MSU shot just 36 percent in the second half and OT periods.
NSU, which won 12 games all of last year, looks to push its winning streak to seven on Monday night in a 7:30 p.m. game across town at Coppin State (8-9, 3-1).
