Women’s Basketball Signs 5 to National Letters of Intent

NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State women's basketball head coach Debra Clark announced Wednesday that high school products Kieera Basey, Amber Brown, Dominique Harper, Koryn Lawrence and Logan Powell have signed national letters of intent to join the Spartans for the 2013-14 season.

"I'm very excited about the recruiting class of 2013. They all come from winning programs and know what it takes to be successful," Clark said. "Although they're all freshmen, I look forward to them contributing significantly very early."

A native of Martinsburg, WVa., Basey is a 5-foot-5 point guard out of Martinsburg High School. After missing the beginning of her senior season due to injury, Basey came back and averaged 10.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 7.3 assists and 3.0 steals per game. She was also named to the Class AAA all-state honorable mention team.

"I'm very excited we were able to sign a player of Kieera's caliber. She's an outstanding point guard with a great understanding of the game," Clark stated. "I feel her greatest asset is her ability to pass the ball, both in transition as well as in the half court."

Brown, a 5-foot-10 power forward from Atlanta, Ga., currently attends Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy. Last season she averaged 12.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 3.0 steals per game. She is the younger sister of Ebony Brown, who is also a member of the NSU women's basketball team.

"We're very excited about signing such a versatile player as Amber," said Clark. "She'll provide depth for us on the perimeter as well as in the post. We look forward to the athleticism and aggressiveness she'll bring to the team."

A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Harper is a 5-foot-5 point guard from Winton Woods High School where she was a four-year starter under head coach Calvin Johnson. Last season she averaged 5.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.2 steals. Harper also led the conference in steals her freshman, sophomore and junior seasons. She broke the school steal record her junior year with 16 steals in a single game. Harper was a three-time all-conference member.

"Dominique's strength is her ability to score from the perimeter," Clark said. "She has the ability to hit the open shot as well as create shots for herself."

Lawrence is a 5-foot-6 shooting guard out of John F. Kennedy High School in Paterson, N.J. She averaged 12.6 points, 4.1 assists, 6.9 rebounds and 4.7 steals last season. Lawrence was also an All-New Jersey honorable mention selection.

"Koryn will add scoring for us on the perimeter," Clark said. "She's very good at creating shots for herself and teammates. Along with her scoring ability, Koryn is also a solid defender and rebounder."

Powell is a 6-foot-0 power forward from Marion County High School in Lebanon, Ky. Last season she averaged 10.4 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game. Powell was also named to the all-state honorable mention team and helped the Knights win the 2013 Kentucky High School Athletic Association Championship. The team finished 39-0. Powell is one of 12 players who make up the Kentucky All-Star squad that will play against a team from Indiana in June.

"Logan is a great addition for us in the post," said Clark. "Her strength on both ends of the floor will give us added quality depth in the post."

The Spartans return eight players and three starters from last season, including All-MEAC second team member Rachel Gordon.
