CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Sophomore
Steve Coles clocked a season-best time in the 400 meter dash to pace the Spartan men's track and field team on Saturday at the Virginia Cup hosted by the University of Virginia.
Coles posted a time of 48.66 seconds to finish third. That was the second-fastest time in his career, behind only a 48.49 he clocked last year at William & Mary.
Redshirt freshman Michael Smith and sophomore
Ryan Turner had the next-highest finishes for the Spartans on Saturday. Smith ran a time of 15.04 seconds to claim fourth place in the 110 meter hurdles, and Turner clocked a 57.93 to take fourth in the 400 meter hurdles.
In other running events,
Damtew Adnew placed seventh in the 1,500 meters (4:11.30) and the 4x400 team of Damond Burns,
Markeith Smith,
Kyle Green and Coles was fourth in a time of 3:22.31.
Sophomore
Clifton Thompson had the best finish for a Spartan male in the field events. He was fourth in the discus (157 feet, 1 inch).
The Spartans are off next week and return to action on April 3-5 with part of the squad participating in the Florida Relays and others at the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg.
