Elizabeth City State Upsets NSU 76-67 Behind 3-Point Shooting

NORFOLK, Va. – Elizabeth City State caught fire in the second half from downtown, and the Vikings shocked the Norfolk State men's basketball team by a score of 76-67 on Monday night at Joseph Echols Hall.

In NSU's last non-conference game of the season, the visiting Vikings shot 7-of-13 from beyond the arc in the second half and 13-of-26 overall to pull off the upset. The Spartans went cold after halftime as ECSU outscored NSU 40-28 in the second half.

A huge 31-10 run for Elizabeth City State that spanned the first and second halves proved to the difference. It turned a 13-point deficit into an eight-point advantage. After tying the score early in the second period, the Vikings never trailed the rest of the way.

Shyheid Petteway made 4-of-6 from 3-point range and 6-of-9 overall for a game-high 23 points with nine rebounds. He was one of five players for ECSU to knock down at least two treys on the night.

Junior Derrik Jamerson Jr. made 5-of-10 from 3-point range for a 15-point night for the Spartans (3-14). Sophomore Steven Whitley added 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting with 12 rebounds, three assists and three steals, tallying his third double-double of the year.

NSU only led at the beginning of the second half after taking a 39-36 lead into the locker room. That came after they led the entire first half while shooting 52 percent from the floor.

The Vikings, though, started to make a run late in the first half after trailing by as much as 13. They closed the first stanza on a 16-6 run. The Vikings hit four 3-pointers early in the second half, part of a 15-4 run coming out of the intermission that completed the larger 31-10 spurt.

That pushed ECSU's lead to 51-43 four and a half minutes into the second stanza. The teams traded points until Petteway nailed a 3-pointer and then another for an 11-point lead, 66-55. Still with more than six minutes left, the Spartans were able to whittle it down to five with less than a minute to go.

But a fastbreak dunk by the Vikings was eventually followed by three straight misses by NSU to close out the game.

NSU made just 27 percent in the second half and 40 percent overall on 22-of-55 shooting. The Spartans converted just 6-of-22 from 3-point range.

The Spartans had control from the start. They scored the first 10 points of the game and led 15-3 in the early going thanks in part to three 3-pointers in the first four and a half minutes of play. Jamerson's third 3-pointer of the half made it 20-8 a little more than seven minutes in.

But the Spartans could never put the Vikings away. Petteway scored eight straight as they got to within eight halfway through the opening stanza. Buckets by senior Bryan Gellineau and Whitley pushed the NSU lead to 13 at 33-20 before ECSU started its big run just 20 seconds later.

Junior Alex Long added 12 points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Senior Kyle Williams chipped in with nine points.

Elizabeth City State made 54 percent in the second half and 49 percent overall on 24-of-49 shooting.

Zaccheus Hobbs tallied 15 points and nine assists, while Charles Woods added 12 points and eight boards. Aujameq Daniels made 3-of-4 from 3-point range and finished with 11 points.

The teams combined for 36 turnovers.

NSU will turn around and head to North Carolina A&T for a Wednesday night game at 7:30 p.m. The contest was originally scheduled for Jan. 6 but was postponed due to weather.
