Spartans Drop 2 on 1st Day of Winthrop Invite

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Sacred Heart squeezed past the Norfolk State softball team by a 3-1 score on Friday afternoon during the first day of the Winthrop Invitational at Terry Field. Later in the day, Morehead State scored all of its runs in the first two innings in an 8-2 victory over the Spartans.

Sacred Heart got a two-run home run from Hailey Desrosiers in the fifth inning for a three-run lead. It proved to be the difference in the game after the Spartans scored a run in the sixth but were unable to get any closer.

The Spartans, meanwhile, committed three errors in a five-run first for Morehead State, which also added three more runs in the second. NSU fell to 8-5 on the year.

Freshman Skylar Swain pitched five innings in the contest against Sacred Heart. Her personal record fell to 4-2 despite allowing just three hits and three runs, all unearned. Both team had three hits in the game.

The Pioneers (4-2) scored the game's first run in the third inning thanks to an error on the Spartans. Another NSU error put a runner on base in the fifth before Desrosiers eventually hit her two-out, two-run homer for a 3-0 lead.

In the sixth inning, senior Julianne Gillo and junior Shelby DesChamps singled to start the inning. Gillo eventually scored on a groundout off the bat of junior Hunter Halford. The Spartans were unable to push across any more runs.

Kristen McCann (3-0) earned the win for Sacred Heart, allowing three hits and one earned run with eight strikeouts in all seven innings.

Junior Kylee Lopez hit 3-for-3 with two RBI in the second game of the day, against Morehead State (10-4).

The Eagles, though, tagged Halford for seven runs, five earned, in 1.1 innings of work.

They started things off with an RBI double in the first, and a double steal of second base and home made it 2-0. After the Eagles hit an RBI single, the Spartans secured the second out of the frame. Another single put two runners on base, and two runs scored on NSU's third error of the inning to give the Eagles a quick 5-0 lead.

Paige Scruggs hit a two-run home run in the second inning, and Ellen Barrett added an RBI double a few batters later for an eight-run lead.

The Spartans scored single runs in the third and sixth innings. Lopez' RBI double in the third scored DesChamps, and she smacked an RBI single in the sixth to account for both of NSU's runs in the game.

Allison Rager (3-3) earned the win for Morehead State, allowing five hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts in five innings of work.

NSU will take on Eastern Kentucky and then host Winthrop on Saturday afternoon during the second day of the tournament.
