Lopez Gives NSU Late Lift in 6-4 Win over MDES

SALISBURY, Md. – Junior Kylee Lopez belted a three-run home run in the top of the seventh as the Norfolk State softball team rallied for a 6-4 win over Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday evening in a MEAC contest at the Henry S. Parker Athletic Complex.

The Spartans faced a 4-1 deficit going into the sixth before scoring a pair in the top of the frame to cut the deficit to one. Lopez then provided her heroics in the seventh for the final margin.

Freshman Skylar Swain earned the win for NSU, which improved to 3-4 in the MEAC and 13-20 overall. Swain ran her personal record to 6-5 after allowing eight hits and four earned runs with five strikeouts in all seven innings.

Maryland Eastern Shore fell to 0-7 in the league and 3-21 overall.

Junior Shelby DesChamps returned to the lineup after missing the last several weeks to hit 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Lopez also scored a pair of runs, and junior Hunter Halford had a pair of hits on the night.

DesChamps made her presence known in her very first at bat. She singled on a 1-2 pitch before stealing second. She made her way to third on a groundout and scored on an error on the same play to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.

But NSU could not get anything going for the next several innings. The Hawks, meanwhile, scored all four of their runs in the fourth. They loaded the bases with two outs and got a pair of two-run singles from Allison Gingrich and Kiana Peterson.

Halford started the rally with a solo homer in the sixth. Lopez walked later in the inning and scored on an error to make it a 4-3 game in favor of the Hawks. Then in the seventh, senior Megan Przeslawski and DesChamps singled to lead off the inning. With NSU down to its last out, Lopez hit her three-run shot over the right field fence for a two-run lead.

The Hawks put a pair of runners on base with one out in the bottom of the seventh before Swain got the last two outs for the win. Nasya Goodman (3-9) suffered the loss after allowing three earned runs on three hits in her only inning of work in the seventh.

The two teams will play a pair of games tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m. at the Parker Athletic Complex.
