Lopez Sets HR Mark on Thursday in Loss to Longwood

NORFOLK, Va. – Junior Kylee Lopez became the new single-season home run leader for the Norfolk State softball team on Thursday afternoon when the Spartans fell to Longwood twice in non-conference play at the NSU Softball Field.

Lopez launched her 13th homer of the season in the first contest, breaking a tie with former Spartan Lekita Wilson, who had owned the record since 1997. Longwood ended up winning the first game by a 5-2 score before also taking game 2 by an 11-2 margin in five innings.

Lopez had two of NSU's five hits in the first contest. Junior Hunter Halford had a pair of hits in the second game and three for the afternoon, while junior Shelby DesChamps hit 2-for-2 in the nightcap, the last non-conference games of the regular season for the Spartans (19-28).

Longwood (32-14) got a strong pitching performance from Sydney Gay in the first game. She struck out eight and allowed five hits and two earned runs while improving to 22-9 overall.

The Lancers got a sac fly in the first and a two-run double off the bat of Kasey Carr in the fourth. The Spartans made it a 3-1 ballgame in the bottom of the fourth on Lopez' blast to center on a 1-0 pitch.

Carr and Jordan Clark hit RBI doubles in the sixth for a 5-1 lead. NSU added a run in the sixth on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of freshman Tuli Iosefa.

Senior Megan Przeslawski, meanwhile, pitched all seven innings and allowed five hits and five runs, four earned, for NSU.

Longwood broke open game 2 with seven runs in the fifth. Prior to that, the Lancers had scored an unearned run in the second and then two more runs in the third on a two-run double from Karleigh Donovan. They added another unearned run in the fourth for a 4-0 lead before the Spartans got one run back.

DesChamps walked to lead off the fourth and was able to score all the way from first on Halford's single to the wall in center field. Longwood, however, had seven hits in the fifth against a pair of NSU pitchers in their breakout inning.

The Spartans loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth and scored their last run of the day on an RBI fielder's choice from Lopez. They had four of their six hits in that last inning but left the bases loaded to end the game.

Sydney Backstrom (10-5) earned the win for Longwood, allowing two hits and one earned run in four innings of work.

Lopez also moved within two of tying the NSU school record for home runs.

The Spartans close out the regular season this weekend when they host Hampton for a three-game series. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
