Candelario Pitches Marist Past NSU, 13-5

NORFOLK, Va. – Erubiel Candelario struck out nine batters over six innings as Marist topped Norfolk State for the second straight day, 13-5, at Marty L. Miller Field on Sunday afternoon.

Candelario (1-0) allowed just four hits and one run for the Red Foxes, who outhit NSU 11-8.

Dionte Brown was 3-for-4 with two triples and Tommy Woods added two hits for the Spartans (0-2).

Marist broke on top early with two runs in the top of the first. Robbie Armitage drove in a run with a groundout and Gavin Noriega hit a two-out RBI single.

The Red Foxes tacked on five more in the third, with the big hit being a two-run single by Reece Armitage.

Trailing 6-0, NSU notched its first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Raphy Rodriguez doubled with one out and scored on the first triple off the bat of Brown.

That started a span where the Spartans scored five runs in a three-inning stretch. In the seventh, freshman Robert Beatty singled in Woods, who had reached on a one-out double. Cody Donnell then scored Steven Shaffer with an RBI groundout.

In the eighth, Brown led off the inning with another triple over the right fielder's head. He scored when Jaco Council reached on a grounder to second. Later in the frame, Council scored on a wild pitch for the Spartans' final tally of the game.

Matt Stanley (0-1) took the loss in his NSU debut after giving up seven runs in 2.2 innings. NSU got 3.1 innings of relief from Jackson Sanchez, who allowed just one run. Dylan Flint, making his first career pitching appearance as a Spartan, struck out four and allowed just one hit in 2.2 innings of work.

Beatty and Kaleikaumaka Grebin recorded their first career hits for the Spartans.

The teams conclude their three-game series at noon on Sunday.
