Big 2nd Frame Helps Georgetown Topple NSU 15-7

NORFOLK, Va. – Georgetown struck for seven two-out runs in the top of the second inning and Norfolk State could not catch up as the Hoyas won the rubber game of the teams' weekend series, 15-7, on Sunday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.

The Spartans fell to 1-5 with the loss, while Georgetown improved to 3-3.

After a scoreless first, NSU lefty Dalton Barham retired the first two batters of the second inning before the Hoyas strung together a lengthy rally. A hit batter and single started it before Adam Dapkewicz singled in the first run of the game. A passed ball on a dropped third strike opened the door for more runs for the Hoyas, including a pair of bases-loaded walks to follow. With the bases still loaded, Andrew Ciufo then hit a two-run single and a third run scored on the play due to an outfield error to cap the uprising.

The Spartans battled back with five runs in the fourth. Tanner Brandon started it off with the first of his two doubles on the day. He scored on Korey Singh's sacrifice fly. A Georgetown error and single by Minjae Hong kept the inning going. Brandon Cleveland then hit a two-run single and later, Dionte Brown lashed a two-run double to bring the Spartans within 7-5.

But Georgetown wasn't done, scoring four times in the top of the fifth. Adam Dapkewicz had the bit hit, a two-run single, and the Hoyas tacked on one more in the sixth to go ahead 12-5.

Tommy Woods singled in a run and Singh scored another with a groundout in the seventh, but the Spartans could get no closer.

Hong (3-for-3) posted a career high in hits and both Brandon and Brown added two each for the Spartans. Singh, Brown and Cleveland all had two RBIs.

Dapkewicz drove in three and Ciufo had three hits for Georgetown.

The Spartans are back in action next Friday through Sunday at Marty L. Miller Field when they host NJIT for a three-game series.
