DSU Starts Fast, Tops NSU 8-3

NORFOLK, Va. – Delaware State scored four times in the first two innings and never looked back in an 8-3 win over Norfolk State on Friday at Marty L. Miller Field to open the teams' four-game weekend series.

Tommy Woods and Raphy Rodriguez both homered and had two hits for the Spartans (12-28, 9-16 MEAC).

DSU scored the game's first run on an RBI triple by Trey Paige in the top of the first. In the second, Mike Worthington singled in a run and Miguel Rivera tripled in two more for the Hornets (16-19, 13-12).

Woods hit a solo homer over the wall down the left-field line in the third inning to get the Spartans on the board. But Rivera singled in a run in the fourth and doubled in one more in a three-run fifth as the Hornets extended their lead to 8-1.

NSU scored an unearned run in the fifth and Rodriguez capped the scoring with a solo blast over the fence in right for his third homer of the season.

Woods was 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a triple and a homer for NSU. Rivera paced the Hornets by going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, and Paige and Worthington both added two hits.

Peter Carreca (2-2) went the distance on the mound for DSU, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) with five strikeouts. James Deloatch (3-4) took the loss for the Spartans, allowing four earned runs and striking out five over four innings. Justin Walton pitched the final five innings, a season-high, allowing two earned runs and striking out four for NSU.
