Biography

2017 (Senior): Enjoyed the most decorated season of any Spartan baseball player since the Division I era began in 1997-98 … Named a third-team Division I All-American by Collegiate Baseball News, Perfect Game and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) … Became the first Spartan to earn recognition on a Division I All-America team encompassing all classifications … Also voted the MEAC Pitcher of the Year and was chosen the HBCU Division I Pitcher of the Year by BlackCollegeNines.com … Picked up first-team All-MEAC and ABCA All-East Region honors … Selected in the 26th round (number 790 overall) of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers … The first Spartan drafted since first baseman Ernie Banks in 2007 … Compiled a 10-2 record and a 1.97 ERA during his senior season … Tied the NSU single-season wins mark and also set new season records with 118 strikeouts in 105.1 innings pitched … Allowed just 75 hits for a .196 opponent batting average … Walked only 16 batters, issuing one or no walks in eight of his 13 appearances … Tossed six complete games in his 13 starts, falling one complete game shy of tying the school’s single-season record in that category … Tied for third nationally in complete games … Also ranked among the top 20 in the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio (sixth, 7.38-1), WHIP (sixth, 0.86), wins (13th), ERA (18th) and strikeouts (18th) … Led the MEAC in each of those categories in addition to opponent batting average … Pitched at least seven innings in 12 of his 13 starts and struck out at least 10 batters on seven occasions … A five-time MEAC Pitcher of the Week selection … Fanned 10 over seven innings and yielded just two runs with no walks in a win over Villanova in his first start of the season … Pitched the first of his two one-hit shutouts at Towson, taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning … Walked four and struck out seven in that game to pick up MEAC Pitcher of the Week accolades … That was the first of three straight complete games and eight straight wins for Hemmerich … The following week, allowed just four hits and one run while fanning 10 in a nine-inning victory over Delaware State … In his next start, allowed just one unearned run and six hits while again striking out 10 in going all nine innings against Maryland Eastern Shore … Picked up MEAC Pitcher of the Week honors again following the wins at DSU and MDES … Struck out a career-high 13 hitters over 7.1 innings in a win at Coppin State … Tallied nine strikeouts over eight innings, giving up just two runs (one earned) in a win at Delaware State … Set NSU’s career strikeout record with a 12-strikeout effort against Maryland Eastern Shore where he pitched seven scoreless innings and allowed just four hits … Selected as MEAC Pitcher of the Week again after that MDES win … Made it two straight conference pitcher of the week honors after he set the single-season NSU strikeout record with 13 punchouts (tying a career high) in a nine-inning complete game against Coppin State the following week … Gave up just four hits and two runs in that one … Tossed his second one-hit shutout of the season the following week against Delaware State, striking out five … Came within one strike of his second career no-hitter in that one, giving up the only DSU hit on an 0-2 count with two outs in the top of the ninth … Again named MEAC Pitcher of the Week and also picked up Collegiate Baseball News National Player of the Week recognition following that performance … Tied the single-game school record by pitching 11 innings the following week at MDES … Took a no-decision in that game despite giving up just eight hits and one run while walking none … Earned the school-record 24th win of his career in the MEAC Tournament in his final collegiate start, striking out seven and allowing seven hits and four runs in the tourney-opener against North Carolina A&T … Named to the MEAC All-Tournament Team for the second year in a row … NSU AD Honor Roll for the spring 2017 semester.
 
2016 (Junior): Posted another strong season as a member of NSU’s weekend rotation … Logged a 5-4 record with a 3.86 ERA … Led the team with 84 strikeouts and was second in innings pitched (81.2) … Among MEAC pitchers, Hemmerich ranked second in strikeouts and seventh in ERA … Struck out 52 batters in MEAC-only competition, tops among conference pitchers … Struck out at least eight batters in four different starts … Ranked 68th in the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.42) … Fanned eight and allowed two earned runs in six innings in a win over MDES in late March, earning his first win of the season … Went 4-0 with one no-decision (also an NSU win) and a 1.44 ERA in his last five starts of the season … Allowed just one earned run with seven strikeouts in 7.2 innings pitched to take the win at MDES in mid-March … Earned MEAC Pitcher of the Week accolades the following week after pitching seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits and striking out eight in a win over Coppin State … Went 6.2 innings, yielding two runs (one earned) with six punchouts in a no-decision against Delaware State … Won his next start by allowing just three hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings at Coppin State … Pitched his only complete game of the season in a MEAC tournament elimination game win over defending conference champion Florida A&M … Struck out a season-high nine batters in nine innings pitched, while allowing the MEAC’s top offense just two runs (one earned) … Named to the MEAC All-Tournament Team for his performance against FAMU … Pitched again with the Peninsula Pilots of the Coastal Plain League during the summer … Named to the CPL All-Star Game … Was 2-1 with a 2.65 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 37.1 innings pitched during the CPL regular season.
 
2015 (Sophomore): Enjoyed a stellar season as a full-time part of NSU’s weekend rotation for the first time … Posted a 4-4 record with a 3.41 ERA in 71.1 innings pitched … Tossed a MEAC-high five complete games, including a no-hitter, and fanned 75 batters … Walked just 15 batters and allowed only 59 hits … Ranked 10th in the nation in complete games … Finished third in the MEAC in strikeouts and fifth in innings pitched … Struck out seven batters over six innings while allowing just four hits and two runs in a no-decision against IPFW … Picked up his first win of the season against Coppin State in late March, allowing two unearned runs in a seven-inning complete game … Followed that up with another complete game in a doubleheader sweep of Delaware State … Struck out a career-high 10 batters over seven innings while allowing just four hits and one unearned run against the Hornets … Pitched a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts in the next series against Coppin State, earning the first of his two MEAC Pitcher of the Week awards … Took a loss against MDES in late April despite not allowing a hit for the first six innings of play … Finished that game (a 1-0 defeat) allowing just two hits and one run with seven strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work … Came back in his next outing and threw NSU’s first no-hitter since 1996 in a 6-1 defeat of Coppin State … Allowed a first-inning run due to a walk, stolen base and groundout, but did not surrender a hit while tying his career high with 10 strikeouts in the seven-inning game … Named MEAC Pitcher of the Week and one of the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s national Players of the Week for his no-hitter … Pitched for the second straight summer with the Coastal Plain League’s Peninsula Pilots … Led the team in strikeouts (41 in 47.2 innings) and posted a 3.40 ERA.
 
2014 (Freshman): An All-MEAC second-team selection and Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American in his rookie year with the Spartans … Hemmerich tied for the team-lead with 21 appearances, making five starts and working out of the bullpen 16 times … Went 5-3 on the year with a team-best 2.49 ERA, which was fourth in the MEAC … Ranked second in the MEAC with five saves … Allowed just 58 hits in 61.1 innings of work, walked just 13 and struck out 38 … Tossed three scoreless innings of relief in the season-opening loss at Furman … Made his first start of the year at Duke in late February, taking the loss despite allowing just two runs in four innings … Earned his first save by recording the final out in game two of the series with Savannah State … Started against SSU the next day and took the loss despite allowing just one earned run in four innings … Pitched five scoreless innings over two relief outings at MDES in late March in which he allowed just two hits and fanned four … Recorded the save in game two of that series with MDES and the win in the series finale … Also picked up a win in relief the following weekend at Coppin State with 1.2 scoreless innings … Tallied his third save of the year in the victory at William & Mary, when he worked two shutout innings … His fourth save came in the second MDES series, when he worked four innings out of the pen and allowed two runs to clinch the win in the series finale … Pitched 7.1 strong innings as the game 1 starter of the Coppin State series later in April … Picked up his third win of the year in that outing by allowing just four hits and one run while walking none and striking out four ... Worked 1.1 scoreless innings to pick up the win in relief against Apprentice … Had an outstanding MEAC Tournament, pitching 12.2 innings and allowing just one run … Picked up a save and a win in the tournament, both in wins over N.C. Central … Opened the tourney by pitching 3.2 innings for the save in the first win over NCCU … Allowed just one hit and struck out three … Came back three days later and pitched his first nine-inning complete game as a collegian, yielding just one run and fanning a season-high eight hitters in an elimination game win over NCCU … Played the latter part of the summer college baseball circuit with the Peninsula Pilots of the Coastal Plain League … Went 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in six innings with the Pilots.
 
High School: Earned first-team All-Metro Conference and VISAA All-State Division 2 accolades as a senior, helping lead the Seahawks to their first-ever state championship … Was the winning pitcher in the state championship game, which was played at NSU … went 8-0 with a 1.65 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 55 innings … Also batted .402 with 24 stolen bases out of the lead-off spot … The Seahawks went 33-2 and were ranked No. 39 nationally by MaxPreps … Lettered all four years … High school pitching record was 19-4.
