2008-2009 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Community Service

October 14, 2008 - SAAC Sponsored a Female Student-Athlete Social 

The female SAAC representatives hosted a social for all female students-athletes to build and enhance relationships among the different sports programs.

October 31, 2008 - Celebration of Halloween at NSU Child Development Center

SAAC representatives and other student-athletes from several teams spent the morning with the children from the NSU Child Development Center to celebrate Halloween.  The student-athletes interacted with the children by reading books, solving puzzles and distributing Halloween baskets with candy.

November 1, 2008 –Shepherd Village Assisted Living Home

SAAC spent the day interacting with the residents of Shepherd Village.  The student-athletes engaged in conversation and played several games with the residents.

November & December, 2008 - Canned Food Drive & Toy Drive

All sport teams combined to collect canned foods and toys during home football and basketball games during the months of November and December.  The student-athletes collected 129 pounds of non-perishable items which were donated to the Southeastern Virginia Foodbank for the Christmas Holiday. In addition, several toys were donated to the Southeastern Virginia Foodbank.

January 17, 2009 - African-American Heritage Day at Portsmouth’s Children’s Museum

Several Norfolk State University (NSU) student-athletes and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representatives assisted the Portsmouth Children’s Museum with their African-American Heritage Day on Saturday, January 17th.   It was an opportunity for the student-athletes to educate children and youth of Hampton Roads about the many accomplishments of African-American inventors.  The students-athletes helped the children make crafts.

January & February, 2009 - Penny Drive

SAAC raised over $500 during the penny drives and contributed $100 of the $1,400 that the organization donated to the Hall-Woodward Elementary School in Winston-Salem, NC.  This event, “READ with the MEAC, ” was scheduled as part of the activities during the 2009 MEAC Basketball Tournament. 

March 9, 2009 – “READ with the MEAC”

Corey Lyons (men’s basketball student-athlete) and Tashawna Higgins (women’s basketball student-athlete) participated READ with the MEAC during the MEAC Basketball Tournament.  The representatives read several books to the students of Hall-Woodward Elementary School.

April 1, 2009 - “Read Across America Celebration-Oakwood Elementary School”

The Norfolk State University (NSU) Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)  partnered with Oakwood Elementary School to celebrate “Reading Across America Day”.  The student-athletes will spent the day celebrating literacy and reading books to the students of Oakwood Elementary.

April 8, 2009 - Easter Egg Hunt at Dreamkeepers Academy “J.J. Roberts Elementary School”

The Norfolk State University (NSU) Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) visited Dreamkeepers Academy on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 to celebrate Easter.  The student-athletes conducted an Easter egg hunt with the youth in the elementary school’s playground.  Prizes were provided for the children who found the gold and silver egg.   This was a great opportunity for the student-athletes to interact and celebrate Easter with youth of Hampton Roads.
