CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Sophomore
Taejah Robertson outclassed the field in the 100-meter hurdles over the weekend at the Charlotte 49er Invitational, just missing out on a new PR en route to a first-place individual finish for the Spartan women's track and field team.
Robertson posted her first sub-14.00 time of the season this year, clocking a 13.87 to come away with the comfortable win. Only her 13.81 in the preliminaries of last year's MEAC Outdoor Championship ranks as a faster time in her career. Robertson is now ranked fourth in the conference in that event this season.
The Spartans' next-highest finish on the track came via freshman
Martha Bissah. Running in the fast section of the 800 meters, Bissah finished second in 2 minutes, 8.55 seconds, just .03 behind winner Megan Moye of N.C. State.
Candice Higgins placed sixth in the same race, in a time of 2:17.46.
Robertson's big day highlighted a strong showing for the Spartans in the hurdles. Senior
Daphne Cobbs (1:04.50) and sophomore
Crystal Green (1:05.37) placed third and fifth, respectively, in the 400 hurdles. In addition to Robertson, freshman
T'Nai Wells claimed eighth in the 100 hurdles in a time of 14.59 seconds.
NSU also showed its depth in the 400 meters, taking third through fifth places. Senior
Nickheila John led the way with a third-place clocking of 56.55 seconds, just ahead of
Chazmin Fullwood in fourth (56.93). Freshman
Jada Key was fifth in 57.30.
Freshman
Caroline Samoei paced the Spartan distance runners by taking sixth in the 3,000 (11:15.35) and 15
th in the 5,000 (19:36.44). Classmate
Ashah Koech was close behind her in both events, placing seventh in the 3,000 (11:32.97) and 17
th in the 5,000 (20:06.08).
NSU's relay teams also fared well in their races. The 4x400 team of Fullwood, Key, Bissah and Higgins finished as runner-up in 3:51.86. The 4x100 squad of Wells, Robertson,
Tyrika Lee and Janay Field crossed the line in third place, in 47.36 seconds.
The Spartans posted a pair of top-10 finishes in field events. Junior
Brianna Hayes tied for fifth in the high jump with a top height of 5 feet, 3 inches. Sophomore
Ashaila Bunch had the other top-10, finishing ninth in the triple jump in 36-5.5.
The Spartans are back in action next weekend at the Morgan State Legacy Meet in Baltimore.
