DOVER, Del. – Senior
Seana Moriarty and junior
Hunter Halford each had three RBI to lead the Norfolk State softball team to a 10-7 win over Delaware State on Sunday afternoon in the series finale at Hornets Nest Field.
The Spartans salvaged the last game of the series thanks to a three-run seventh that broke a 7-7 tie. NSU overcame a seven-run fifth for the Hornets, who scored all of their runs in the game in just that one inning.
Halford, meanwhile, hit a pair of solo home runs, part of a 12-hit barrage for NSU. She went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI, while Moriarty batted 2-for-2 with three RBI. The Spartans were able to win despite leaving 10 runners on base.
Junior
Kylee Lopez hit a pair of doubles and batted 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI as well. NSU improved to 2-4 in the MEAC and 12-20 overall.
The Spartans led 7-0 before the Hornets tied it up in the fifth. NSU got things going in the second, with Lopez driving in freshman
Tuli Iosefa with an RBI double. Moriarty plated the next run with a sac bunt, and sophomore
Cher Jamison's RBI triple to right center made it 3-0.
Halford and Iosefa hit back-to-back home runs in the third to stretch the advantage to five, and Halford led off the fifth with a solo homer to center. Freshman
Jazzmaine Hammond later walked and scored after two straight singles from Lopez and Moriarty.
The Hornets (7-18, 5-1 MEAC), however, broke through in a big way in the fifth. Back-to-back doubles started things off, and the big blow came at the end when Vanessa Washington cleared the bases with a grand slam to left.
But the Spartans scored three in the seventh. Lopez doubled and scored on Moriarty's RBI single. Later with the bases loaded, senior
Julianne Gillo and Halford drew walks for the last runs of the game.
Alexis Goldsby (3-7) walked eight batters and allowed eight hits and seven earned runs in 4.1 innings out of the bullpen to take the loss for DSU. Freshman
Kayla Porter (3-3) earned the win for NSU after allowing one hit and one earned run in 2.2 innings of relief.
Iosefa had two hits in four at bats and scored twice.
NSU will be back on the road next weekend when the Spartans travel to Maryland Eastern Shore. The teams will play on Friday and Saturday due to the Easter holiday.
