McCarthy Pitches Hoyas Past NSU 6-2

NORFOLK, Va. – Nolan McCarthy allowed just two hits over six scoreless innings to lead Georgetown to a 6-2 win over Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon, evening the series between the teams at Marty L. Miller Field.

McCarthy struck out nine for the Hoyas (2-3), who grabbed an early lead and made it stand up.

Shortstop Raphy Rodriguez matched his career high with three hits for NSU (1-4).

GU took a 1-0 lead in the first. Ethan Stern singled and eventually scored on a two-out wild pitch to score the game's first run.

In the third, the Hoyas doubled their lead as Andre Ciufo double and scored on a passed ball. Owen Carapellotti singled in two runs in the sixth. Carapellotti and Jake Hyde tacked on RBI singles in the eighth.

The Spartan offense clicked in the eighth, notching four of their six hits on the day. Korey Singh started the rally with a double and took third on a single by Cody Donnell. Rodriguez singled in Singh and Tanner Brandon notched his first RBI as a Spartan with a double that scored Donnell.

NSU's four pitchers – Justin Walton, Matt Stanley, Jackson Sanchez and Noah Wiggins – combined for 14 strikeouts, most by the Spartans in a game this year and their third straight game in double figures. Walton (0-2) was charged with the loss, giving up one earned run and two total in four innings of work in his first start of the year. He and Stanley each fanned four batters and Sanchez and Wiggins each tallied three.

The teams play the rubber game of their series at noon on Sunday.
